Our Story — Sparties Original | Canvas ballet flats

In brief

Born in 1965 in the heart of Central Europe, these small canvas shoes were created for the Spartakiads, massive sports gatherings. True symbols of freedom of movement, they have transcended decades without aging, moving from school gymnasiums to the trendy streets of Prague.

Our story

Born in 1965 (remember the year) in Czechoslovakia, in the heart of Europe, these small canvas shoes were created for the Spartakiads — immense state-orchestrated sports gatherings, where everything was regulated like a ballet: the uniform, the gesture, everyone's place.

You have to imagine the scene. Prague, Strahov Stadium — the largest stadium ever built. 250,000 spectators. A lawn as large as nine football fields. And on it, tens of thousands of men, women, and children drawing, to the millimeter, waves, spirals, living kaleidoscopes — figures visible only from the sky. For the picture to exist, everyone had to be identical: same canvas, same white, same gesture. The uniform was there to draw.

Because 1965 is not an insignificant date. The first editions marched in step; this one relaxed. The figures modernized, sequences were set to cha-cha-cha tunes, and for the first time, people came less out of obligation than out of desire. The uniform was still provided, the gesture still regulated — but it was in that atmosphere, precisely, that these shoes were born. Not from order: but from those who, that year, made it dance.

That atmosphere, no program can create: the very physical intoxication of moving with ten thousand others. The choreography was pre-written; the electricity, however, belonged only to those who experienced it.

The gatherings eventually disappeared. Not them. White, identical, they shod entire generations — girls and boys, in every sports class, for decades. A uniform in the true sense of the word: the same for everyone.

The color, however, has a more cunning history. From the time of the gymnasiums, women dyed and altered their cvičky (that's their Czech name — pronounced tsvitchki) to turn them into city ballet flats, unavailable in stores. The factory followed, not preceded: the first colored versions came out in the mid-80s, with the small tricolor tag. But white remained the rule. It's now that color takes over — and with it, choice. No longer because it has to be. But because we want it to be.

Sparties takes this object and extends its story. Yesterday's uniform served the picture — today's serves those who wear it. We no longer receive it: we choose it. No longer a sign that we are alike — but that we recognize ourselves.
